Boston's WGBH Deploys SAN Solutions' Media Production SANStorage Platform Supports Growing Range of Programs Including "Antiques Roadshow" and "Greater Boston" (July 27, 2010)
The SAN Solutions platform supports production of WGBH's daily local news program "Greater Boston," as well as its popular national series, "Antiques Roadshow," currently in its 14th season on PBS. In addition, the SAN Solutions Media Production SAN facilitates production of other local and national WGBH programming, including annual pledge drives and special events.
"The Media Production SAN has created an efficient workflow and facilitated real-time processing of our file-based content," said Joe Igoe, CTO at WGBH. "The Media Production SAN promotes the file-based workflows we need to move quickly and efficiently, and provides the tools our production teams need."
The SAN Solutions Media Production SAN at WGBH was installed in 2008 to support "Greater Boston," and a second-phase upgrade in 2009 extended the number of client seats and storage capacity to enable easy migration of other shows onto the Media Production SAN. The latest phase, completed in May 2010, brings increased capacity to the system to support additional programs like "Antiques Roadshow," and maintains performance through a parallel storage head. A fully multipathed fiber channel fabric back to the storage controllers helps to maximize reliability and ensure high-performance operation within WGBH's collaborative production environment. The Media Production SAN is integrated with a Telestream Pipeline system for ingest and with Final Cut Pro(R) nonlinear edit systems.
"The WGBH installation is an example of how SAN Solutions' phased approach gives customers an immediate boost in their production capabilities, as well as the foundation for continued growth and further leveraging of powerful storage infrastructure," said Harry Aine, SAN Solutions president and CEO. "The scalable centralized storage system supports efficient collaborative workflows by allowing media to be stored centrally and available to multiple simultaneous users. Because it can be expanded cost-effectively, the Media Production SAN also enables growth at a pace that matches the demands of production and business operations."
The Media Production SAN provides 30 TB of usable storage and is configured for RAID 6 protection. SAN Solutions engineers have worked closely with WGBH to tailor the system to the station's evolving needs, and the company provides ongoing 24/7 support for the entire storage system.
