Boris Calligraphy: First OS X-Native Titler

Final Cut Pro generators offer 2D and 3D effects By Dave Nagel
Boris FX has introduced the first titling software to run natively in Mac OS X--Boris Calligraphy. The new software suite is a set of two title generators for the recently announced Final Cut Pro 3.0, and it will actually be included for free with Final Cut Pro 3.0, which is scheduled to ship at the end of the month. The software right now runs on both OS X and OS 9. Boris says that, in addition to Calligraphy, its entire product line will be brought over to Mac OS X in early 2002, including Boris RED and Graffiti. The company will be announcing special upgrade prices for Final Cut Pro 3 users who want to take advantage of some of the more advanced features offered in the company's retail product line.

Calligraphy itself includes two title generators--Title Crawl and Title 3D. Title Crawl is designed to provide automated roll and crawl effects. Title 3D provides vector-based text effects that can be manipulated in 3D space with control over pivot, transformations and automated tracking. It can also be used to create static slates that can then be animated in real time on Final Cut Pro systems that support realtime.

According to Boris, both generators share a common interface--text entry window and style palette. The palette provides formatting options like leading, kerning, tabs and text wrap, as well as controls for fill, stroke and shadow. We will be bringing you previews of Calligraphy's titling capabilities next week, which will also be the time when Boris announces upgrade pricing options.
