Boat sank so fast no time for distress call

Fishing boat sank so fast off Washington there was no time for distress call, 4 men lost By The Associated Press

Jason Bjaranson (BYAR-an-son) knew the perils of the life he had chosen as a commercial fisherman in the Pacific Ocean. His brother and girlfriend say he practiced the life-or-death drill of getting into his survival suit so he could do it in 13 seconds. At 39, he was starting to think he should buy some life insurance, and even find a safer job on shore.

None of that mattered Saturday, when Bjaranson and three other men went down with the Lady Cecelia, a 70-foot fishing boat out of Warrenton, Ore.

Bjaranson's brother, Adam, says he has heard speculation from Coast Guard personnel that it may have been struck by a rogue wave. All the family knows is it happened so fast the crew never got off a distress call.
