Blur Studio Serves Up ?The Menu for Fox

Design firm creates show package for youth-oriented magazine series (July 27, 2004)

Applying its insight into youth culture, Blur Studio recently designed and produced the graphics package for The Menu, the new magazine-style entertainment show for teens on Fox. The studios design team combined elements from a restaurant menu, a web menu, a school notebook and other pop culture icons into a fun, fresh and enormously energetic package that perfectly complements the shows promise to deliver the buzz on everything thats ?new and now.

?Over the years we have worked on numerous shows spanning several networks that are geared toward teens. This new series competes with Saturday morning television, so it needed to be visually exciting and fast-paced, said Blur Studio creative director Jennifer Miller. ?Todays youth audience is smart, discriminating and can absorb an enormous amount of information at once. The designs are heavily layered with trend-setting, eye-grabbing graphics that have an originality all their own.

Deliverables included the show logo and main title sequence, as well as segment graphics used to introduce features on movies, sports, music, TV and other subjects in a modular toolkit.

?For inspiration, we embraced the 1980s bubble-gum punk rock aesthetic which is popular in music and fashion right now, observed Blur Studio creative director/designer Norn Kittiaksorn. ?The vibe is light, poppy and easily accessible. Black and white stripes, checkerboard patterns that recall Vans sneakers, cherry icons, and a vibrant color palette complete the visual style of the show.

Kittiaksorn added that the graphics high energy pacing is calculated to grab the restless attention of todays media savvy youth. ?The graphics definitely move at an accelerated speed, she said. ?It was important to create a sense of structure amidst the visual complexity. We developed a color coding and iconographic system to organize the information so that viewers can quickly assimilate everything they are seeing.

Blur Studio has had plenty of experience in designing graphics for shows targeting young audiences. Its recent credits include the Billboard Music Awards and Teen Choice Awards for Fox, Nickelodeons Kids Choice Awards and the several network campaigns for Kids WB!
