Blur Studio Does TV Promo for Lemony Snickets

Design Studio?s Beautifully Sinister Graphics Capture Carrey Comedy?s Frightful Spirit

Blur Studios broadcast design team has produced a national television ad campaign for Nickelodeon promoting the theatrical release of the Acadamy Award nominated, Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events, the holiday blockbuster based on the popular series of books by Daniel Handler and starring Jim Carrey. Working in concert with Nickelodeons in-house creative team, Blur Studio crafted 10 high-energy spots, blending graphics and film clips to capture the wonderfully whimsical spirit of the frightfully funny tale. The film has grossed more than $100 million at the box office more in the U.S. and Canada.

The package includes spots highlighting each of the films four main characters as well as its official website and a big sweepstakes contest. The cleverly animated graphics and eclectic typography design were derived from the rich and textural visuals depicted in the film. The spots writing and accompanying voiceover, wonderfully delivered by Jude Law, the films narrator, act as if they were trying to scare off potential moviegoers, warning of ?scenes of misery and woe and advising viewers to cover their television sets with blankets.

The television campaign builds upon the movies print advertising, according to Eric Alan, the project Executive Producer representing Nickelodeons on-air creative movie advertising group.

?Blur turned the print concepts into broadcast design animations that not only capture the Lemony franchise, but expand it, taking it into a place it hadnt been before, Alan said. ?They did an extraordinary job in telling the story and in explaining what the movie is all about.

Blur creative director Jennifer Miller saw an opportunity to develop a rich promo campaign that would draw in audiences of all ages as well as brand the film in a manner consistent with its blithely sinister tone and atmosphere. ?Creating an entire on-air campaign for Nick proved to be a great collaborative experience, Miller stated. ?Although each spot is self contained, together they form an extended narrative that allows us to really engage viewers in a playful way and get them to understand what this film is all about.

?Lemony Snicket is a uniquely foreboding childrens story with a modern gothic style that is wickedly fun and richly textured, explained Blur Studio creative director/designer Norn Kittiaksorn.  ?We designed and created these spots with a strong darkly sumptuous style, as well as with the irony and wit characteristic of the series of books themselves. Although each spot has an individualized look based on its subject, a consistent aesthetic unifies the campaign, relating everything back to the film.

?The visual richness is unbelievable. The animation is unbelievable. The wit is outstanding, added Alan. ?They used the kid vernacular in a fresh, sophisticated, joyful way.

Credits for Blur Studio go to Norn Kittiaksorn and Jennifer Miller, creative directors; Norn Kittiaksorn, lead designer; Adam Swaab, designer; Beth Elder, producer; Jayson Whitmore and Adam Swaab, lead animators; Emmett Dzieza, Jim McDaniels and Josh Graham, animators.
