Blago lawyer: Don't punish him for state historyBlagojevich attorney says he shouldn't be treated more harshly because of Illinois history
CHICAGO (AP) ' Rod Blagojevich's attorney says she's worried the ousted Illinois governor will be treated more harshly by the judge because of the state's long history of political corruption.
Carolyn Gurland says it would be unfair to Blagojevich for Judge James Zagel impose a stiffer sentence because of previous officials sent to prison such as former Gov. George Ryan and Congressman Dan Rostenkowski.
She says if Blagojevich gets the sentence prosecutors recommended for convictions including trying to sell President Barack Obama's old Senate seat, he would become the most severely punished public official in state history.
Gurland said earlier that Blagojevich is a devoted father, and that he and his wife knew they would be ridiculed for their reality television appearances, but they needed money to provide for their children.
