Blackmagic Intros New DeckLink Boards

Capture and playback cards available for Mac OS X By Dave Nagel
Blackmagic design has expanded its line of QuickTime capture and editing boards with the introduction of two new models, the DeckLink Pro and DeckLink SP. DeckLink Pro offers enhancements over the previous DeckLink board, while DeckLink SP adds in features for supporting Sony Betacam SP and Digital Betacam. Both cards will be available this month with support for Mac OS X 10.2.

DeckLink Pro is a 10-bit QuickTime capture and editing board with uncompressed SDI input and output and support for real-time effects. It also offers eight channels of S/PDIF digital audio output for 5.1- or 7.1-channel surround sound monitoring. Other features include:

  • Fully digital SMPTE-259M 10-bit SDI input and output;
  • Separate SDI video and analog component YUV video monitoring outputs;
  • Four S/PDIF digital audio outputs for eight-channel audio monitoring;
  • Genlock input;
  • Uncompressed 10-bit and 8-bit capture and playback;
  • Built-in DV bridge;
  • Compressed full-resolution JPEG capture and playback mode;
  • Sony-compatible RS-422 serial deck control port;
  • Real time 10-bit color correction, dissolves and image control effects, upgradable through free downloads;
  • Extended desktop feature that allows for the use of a studio monitor to be used as a second computer monitor;
  • Switchable between NTSC and PAL;
  • 64-bit RGB codec;
  • Support for Pinnacle, AJA Video and Digital Voodoo formats;
  • YUV native rendering in supported applications.

The DeckLink Pro also includes Deck control software for broadcast tape deck capture and playback, as well as a universal free software codec for Mac OS X, Mac OS 9 and Windows. The card itself is compatible with Mac OS X 10.2 and will be available shortly after the NAB convention for $1,295.

The DeckLink SP card is an uncompressed video card with analog stereo audio for connecting to analog decks, such as Betacam SP. It offers analog component YUV video input and output, with stereo balanced analog XLR audio. It also features 10-bit uncompressed SDI video output with eight channels of embedded SDI audio, along with a S/PDIF digital audio output. It also shares several of the other features available in the new DeckLink Pro, including:

  • Genlock input;
  • Uncompressed 10-bit and 8-bit capture and playback;
  • Built-in DV bridge;
  • Compressed full-resolution JPEG capture and playback mode;
  • Sony-compatible RS-422 serial deck control port;
  • Real time 10-bit color correction, dissolves and image control effects, upgradable through free downloads;
  • Extended desktop feature that allows for the use of a studio monitor to be used as a second computer monitor;
  • Switchable between NTSC and PAL;
  • 64-bit RGB codec;
  • Support for Pinnacle, AJA Video and Digital Voodoo formats;
  • YUV native rendering in supported applications.

DeckLink SP features the Deck Control software, universal codec and Mac OS X 10.2 compatibility. Blackmagic says the DeckLink SP will ship at the end of April for $1,095.
