Berklee College of Music Adopts Propellerhead's ReasonReason Software Studio will be used for teaching electronic music. (October 18, 2001)
of Music has installed Reason, the innovative software electronic music studio
from Propellerheads, on computers throughout the college. Berklee has chosen
Reasons virtual on-screen equipment to teach signal flow, routing, mixing,
synthesis, sampling, and sequencing. Never before has one software application
been able to provide students with virtual hands on experience using
so many different pieces of electronic music gear.
David Mash-Vice President of Technology for Berklee, Rick Scott from Parsons
Audio, and Gary Karlsrud from Midiman-US distributor for Propellerheads, arranged
the purchase and installation of the Reason site license. Reason is now one
of the favorite applications among the students. The program greatly enhances
the existing electronic music facilities and capabilities at the College. In
some instances, students have become informal Reason user groups, sharing and
Berklee is pleased to provide our students with state-of-the-art music
production tools, and Reason offers a virtual production environment ideally
suited to both electronic music production and learning. Our goal is to provide
real-world, hands-on experience using the tools of the profession, and we are
so pleased to be able to offer Berklee students the opportunity to work with
these high quality software tools, said David Mash.
Reason is a software package that looks, works, and sounds like a rack of electronic
music gear. Analog synthesizers, samplers, drum machines, loop players, various
effects, mixers, and an on-screen sequencer are all tied together ready to compose
music. By clicking the mouse on the various controls of the equipment, users
can actually turn knobs, move sliders, and even go behind the virtual rack of
equipment and use life-like rear panel patch cables to route all the equipment,
including the effects. The biggest advantage of using Reason is that the number
of synths, drum machines, and samplers one can use is limited only by their
CPU power. A newer laptop can run over 30 pieces of equipment.
