Bazley Films Goes to the Park

Animator Richard Bazley starts the second in the Edwin Carp series By Frank Moldstad
With the critical success of his new animated short film, The Journal of Edwin Carp, Richard Bazley has relocated from Los Angeles to his native England to set up his own company and make a sequel? The Return of Edwin Carp. As in the previous film, The Return of Edwin Carp will focus on the misadventures of the title character from the 1954 book "The Journal of Edwin Carp" by Richard Haydn, to which Bazley secured film rights.

Bazley, whose impressive animation credits include lead animator on Warners The Iron Giant and Disneys Hercules, has established Bazley Films in a high-tech bucolic retreat called Corsham Media Park about an hour west of London. The medieval country surroundings may seem a surprising choice, instead of the Soho scene in London where many English production houses are located.

But Corsham Media Park is by all accounts a special place. Plus, Bazley points out, Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman Animation havent done too badly in another out-of-the-mainstream locale in nearby Bristol. The amenities at Corsham Media Park include studios, blue screen facilities, underground storage, a sound stage, and a back lot. The park, just opened on the site of an old military base, has another big advantage: 1.6 terabytes of available bandwidth, courtesy of a former Ministry of Defense communications grid on the property called the ?Golden 8, now the internet backbone in the UK.

We interviewed Richard Bazley recently, as he was setting up shop in the new Media Park.

DMN: How big is your new studio, and how many people work there? What is it called?

Bazley: I currently have two offices within the Media Park of approximately 1,000 square feet. However, the capability is there to expand and contract per project depending on the needs.

I have a 3D artist who is familiar with all the packages, Maya, LightWave, 3ds max, etc. I also have a Production Manager. It is early days yet, but the intention is to have a small core group and then use an additional pool of freelancers, which is common in animation. In the past, I have freelanced on TV commercials and TV episodes. The name is Bazley Films and in a way has come to existence due to the excellent press The Journal of Edwin Carp has received.
