Bauhaus Mirage Project Takes Grand Prix Award at OttawaFierlingers' film "A Room Nearby" wins at 2004 Animated Film Festival (September 28, 2004)
Bauhaus Software Inc., a leading provider of software for the 2D animation and digital visual effects markets, today announced that Paul and Sandra Fierlinger's film, "A Room Nearby," which was animated entirely in Mirage, has won the Grand Prix for Commissioned Films at the 2004 Ottawa International Animation Festival. The Ottawa Festival is the largest festival of its kind in North America and one of the most respected animation festivals in the world. According to festival officials, the film was chosen "for its simplicity and profound emotion. This film goes directly to the heart of its subject, which is solitude. It's a film that talks about us."
"A Room Nearby" is an animated documentary, which follows the stories of loneliness of five different people. Created entirely digitally, the film was produced using Bauhaus Mirage as the sole tool for storyboarding, animation and coloring. As the center of a paperless animation workflow, Mirage combines award-winning drawing and paint tools with an artist-oriented animation timeline. Mirage is the only tool that allows artists to create digital animation in a style and fashion that looks like it was done by hand.
"Our work has improved ever since we started using Mirage," said Paul Fierlinger. "Drawing paperlessly in Mirage makes a huge difference -- not just because of the speed of drawing Mirage offers, with real time playback and the assembly and coordination of timeline layers -- but Sandra's time spent on paint work has become shorter as well. This really is the perfect tool for the independent animator."
"We are thrilled that the Fierlingers' latest work has been recognized by this prestigious award, and that our tools were able to contribute to their success," said Paul Ford, president of Bauhaus Software. "Many of the artist-oriented features in Mirage were developed with the Fierlingers' collaboration and advice; this has added greatly to Mirage's amazing array of natural media tools and unique ability to create all styles of 2D animation."
"A Room Nearby" is scheduled to air for the first time later this year on PBS' Point of View - public television's annual award-winning showcase for independent non-fiction films.
The Mirage animation production environment provides a diverse toolset and a strong, centralized workflow for 2D animation, animated graphics, and special effects creation. Designed for projects of any resolution, ranging from HDTV and film to Web video, Mirage provides a common sense, powerful alternative to expensive proprietary solutions and complex software workflows. 2D animators use Mirage as a unified drawing, paint, animation and effects solution, allowing them to sidestep traditional scan/ink/paint workflows, and move directly from digital pencil tests to editing within a single product.
