BattleMart Opens for BusinessBIGSMACKtv Produces New On-Air Campaign for Nicktoons Network (October 20, 2008) DMN Newswire--2008-10-20--BIGSMACKtv was tapped by Nicktoons Network to produce a new on-air promotional campaign for the networkâ€™s new Saturday morning programming block. The block, which launched earlier this month, features the animated comedy series Making Fiends, Mr. Meaty, Tak and the Power of Juju, among others.
BIGSMACKtv was asked to conceive and create on-air packaging that targets the networkâ€™s largely boy audience. The result is brothers Punchy and Jabby, two mascots with too much time, not enough supervision, and nothing to do except fight and down Big Gulpsâ„¢. The duo hangs out at the BattleMart cartoon 24-hour convenience store where the fur flies all day long. Scuffling on top of Mt. Rushmore or crashing through an office window, they donâ€™t care how far the fight takes them as long as they get the last smack.
The on-air packaging was shot in HD on location in Canoga Park, Calif. and shot on green screen in West Hollywood, Calif. Whether scrapping on the blacktop or slugging it out atop a roller coaster, Punchy and Jabby were brought to life through a combination of in-camera sight gags, heavily composited effects, and two veteran stunt men in stuffy animal suits.
BIGSMACKtv deftly created a large package consisting of two opens, 10 bumps, 10 IDs, menus, in show promo elements, and more. The end result is a refreshing, atypical, and noteworthy "boy-targeted" campaign, unique in its use of live action to package cartoons.
"We showed up at the pitch with some stick figure drawings of an elephant and tiger beating each other up, and said â€˜thatâ€™s it, thatâ€™s our big idea,â€™" says, Andy Hann. "We felt it was the right way to go, but were half expecting to be thrown out on our ear. The Nicktoons team loved it and gave us the green light. They are a very open-minded and forward thinking group, and we had a blast bringing it all to life."

The scope of the project was vast: concept, naming, logo design, custom costume design, pre-production and production for the shoots (location and green screen), editorial, compositing and 2D & 3D graphics to create the many package elements needed (Opens, IDs, bumpers, menus, lower thirds, promo elements, etc.)
