BadgeStack Gives Organizations Power to Grant Mozilla Open Badge Infrastructure (OBI) Compliant Digital Badges

System Is First to Reward Learners With Lifelong Badges That Can Be Collected in the Mozilla Backpack (January 03, 2012)

NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 01/03/12 -- Today, LearningTimes, LLC announced that its new BadgeStack™ badge-based learning system is now Mozilla Open Badge Infrastructure (OBI) compliant. BadgeStack is the first and only standards-based system designed specifically for badge-empowered, formal and informal learning. The ground-breaking system gives organizations of all kinds the power to issue badges that reward and recognize skill and knowledge acquisition as well as social and professional engagement within a learning community.

BadgeStack is the only learning system built from the ground up to integrate with the new Open Badge Infrastructure (OBI) standard created by the Mozilla Foundation. If enabled by an organization, learners can choose to have their badges sent to the Mozilla Open Badge Backpack, where they are combined with badges from other issuers and stored. That badge collection then becomes a living transcript or story explaining what the learners know and showcasing the skills, knowledge and competencies they have acquired throughout their learning paths. Learners can manage their badges, set privacy controls and share out groups of badges through their Badge Backpack.

"We are excited about BadgeStack -- it will bootstrap the badge ecosystem by enabling more organizations to easily become badge issuers. We are even more excited to see the OBI standards integrated into the BadgeStack system. The OBI will help to make digital badges a coherent, portable and meaningful way to demonstrate capabilities," said Mozilla's Learning Director, Erin Knight. "As more organizations and learning providers issue badges to represent skills and achievements that traditional degrees and transcripts often leave out, learners can use their badge collections for real results -- new or better jobs, community recognition, and new learning opportunities."

"The new Mozilla OBI standard is just the ingredient needed now to help badges go from digital stickers to concrete credentials," said Jonathan Finkelstein, founder of LearningTimes and director of the BadgeStack Project. "While BadgeStack helps a growing number of organizations connect, assess and reward learners, it's affirming that earned badges can be showcased within a global landscape that now has a definition of consistency."

The BadgeStack system is an ideal vehicle for building learning experiences around existing materials, subject matter expertise, peer-to-peer interaction, and open educational resources (OER), and for recognizing the informal and social learning that happens both in and out of institutional settings.
