BFI partners with Sohonet to provide superfast free Wi-Fi to its Southbank visitors(October 17, 2011)
LONDON: Sohonet (www.sohonet.com), the global expert in connectivity and data management for the media and entertainment industry, is pleased to announce that its long-term partnership with the British Film Industry (BFI) continues with the installation of a 100Mbit/s fibre line connection and Sohonet Wireless Solution at its Southbank site. The new connectivity solution will enable the UKs leading film organisation to offer superfast, reliable and secure free Wi-Fi to visitors, whilst optimising its corporate events package to include new digital application capabilities that enhance the interactive experience of both internal and external audiences.
The BFI has enjoyed a relationship with Sohonet since 2003 when, as part of the National Film Theatres industry initiative to test new digital technologies from different companies, it was chosen to install a high-speed link to facilitate new digital projection screenings.
Richard Boyd, Head of Technical for BFI Southbank, comments: ?Sohonet has always provided the worlds most cutting edge connectivity technologies for our industry and we feel that we are in very safe hands. Where other providers have said certain objectives were unachievable, Sohonet has proved them wrong every time by relentlessly working on finding a solution. Our previous Wi-Fi service just could not cope with the increasing bandwidth demand of visitors wanting access to rich content at our Southbank site. We are consequently delighted that Sohonet has come on board to deliver a faster, more robust and secure service that will enable all our visitors to experience superfast network access at all times.
The BFIs new connection will enable the organisation to host interactive Premier events and Q&A sessions with directors and other industry luminaries, and broadcast these live to other cinemas across the globe. This will give regional audiences greater access to creative talent and facilitate the means for increased live interactive debate.
Greg Barrett, Sohonets Chief Strategy Officer said: ?The BFI is the custodian of the UKs film and television heritage and its Southbank venue is an increasingly popular place for people to meet up and hang out. The BFI attracts many visitors from the film and television industry and they expect instant access to rich content without any hiccups. Now that the BFI has the optimum connectivity infrastructure in place to take it into the future, it can now assess the viability of exciting, new digital applications to create a state-of-the-art digital cinema experience.
In addition to providing an event specific service that enables the BFI to burst its bandwidths up to 100 Mbit/s to cater for large audience events and increased audience interaction, Sohonets service also includes access to its world-renowned Sohonet Media Network (SMN).
Boyd adds: ?Sohonets Media Network is the largest and most established private, high-performance network for the media industry and it is fantastic that we are now part of it. The organisation and its corporate clients can connect to the worlds leading studios, production and post-production facilities and benefit from new opportunities for global collaboration.
