BBC to Provide RealSystem iQ to European Content Producers and Rights Holders

(August 09, 2001)
RealNetworks Inc. has unveiled an alliance with BBC Technology in an effor to extend the global reach of RealNetworks' media delivery platform. The alliance was announced to European media earlier this summer.

BBC Technology is one of the first European technology companies to deploy RealSystem(R) iQ, RealNetworks' ground-breaking universal Internet-media delivery platform. RealSystem iQ is a highly flexible, standards-based, OS-independent architecture designed to dramatically increase the scalability of Internet broadcasts through unprecedented levels of reliability. Through the alliance with RealNetworks, BBC Technology will provide its clients, content producers, and rights holders with highly scaleable, reliable Internet hosting, streaming, and integration services, as well as access to customized media and e-commerce applications.

"The BBC has been partnering with RealNetworks and utilizing RealSystem to deliver digital media content to the web for over 5 years," said Philip Langsdale, Chief Executive of BBC Technology. "BBC Technology can now extend that deep experience to ensure a whole new class of quality delivery for content producers and rights holders across Europe for the first time."

BBC Technology's deployment of RealSystem iQ will enable Europe's premier broadcasting services to scale delivery to massive audiences for live or on-demand digital media content. Currently, BBC Technology broadcasts over 30 live media programs and more than 100,000 on-demand clips for the BBC using RealNetworks technology. This partnership ensures wholly new levels of quality programming will be delivered to a burgeoning European audience.

"We're thrilled that this strengthened alliance between BBC Technology and RealNetworks will now allow European audiences to realize the benefits of RealSystem iQ," said Rob Glaser, Chairman and CEO, RealNetworks, Inc. "European content producers and rights holders can now turn to a world-renowned, trusted broadcasting company to host their European content, achieve a great end user experience, and reach out to the more than 40 million RealPlayer users in Europe."

About RealSystem iQ

RealSystem iQ is a robust, standards-based, end-to-end system architecture that can provide a single common framework for global Internet media delivery -- from any platform, in any format, and to any device. RealSystem iQ operates at multiple levels to eliminate congestion in the "middle of the network." Previous technologies relied on origin servers to distribute media streams hierarchically to edge servers and then to consumers; these first-generational designs are subject to multiple points of failure and expensive investments to lessen network congestion.

RealSystem iQ's Neuralcast(TM) Technology fundamentally changes this "one-way" approach of origin-to-edge distribution. By creating honeycombs of distributed interconnected servers, Neuralcast Technology empowers all servers to broadcast into the network, receive content from any other server, and deliver media to consumers. In addition, RealSystem iQ is designed to transport and deliver over 50 media types -- including RealAudio(R), RealVideo(R), MP3 and Flash -- as well as deliver Apple QuickTime content to QuickTime clients. RealSystem iQ also provides the extensible architecture to enable next-generation devices including wireless mobile devices and broadband-ready set-top boxes.
