BBC English Regions Implements ON-AIR Systems K SeriesAutomated Television Playout for New Local TV Services (January 18, 2006)
ON-AIR Systems, international developer of software for broadcasters, is today announcing that BBC English Regions has implemented an automated television playout solution from ON-AIR Systems ?K Series for its new Local TV services which are currently being piloted across the West Midlands. The new equipment, comprising two ON-AIR playKast playout systems and ON-AIR Kapture media ingest software, provides powerful, easy to use playout capabilities enabling Local TV journalists to prepare schedules and run-down lists, create graphics, and play out all from a single integrated broadcasting environment.
Local TV is a new service available via Digital Satellite and Broadband to households in the West Midlands for an initial 9-month trial period. Viewers from each of six areas, namely Birmingham, The Black Country, Coventry, Warwickshire, Hereford and Worcester, and Shropshire and Staffordshire, can view local news, weather updates and other information pertaining to their own locality. Content is sourced by teams of video journalists who respond to local news developments and story suggestions from residents. At the end of the trial period, the BBC is hoping to extend Local TV to a total of 60 areas across the UK.
The pilot project in the West Midlands is providing an opportunity for the BBC to experiment with content ideas and formats, and is also allowing them to identify and trial an infrastructure of broadcasting technology that delivers the most effective methods of content creation and distribution.
The ON-AIR media capture and playout systems provide a central role in the workflow of the new services. The video journalists acquire content in DV 25 using Sony Z1 cameras. This is edited using Xpress Pro systems and sent via SDI to the ON-AIR software where it is compiled into six 10-minute slots one for each Local TV service. The ON-AIR playKast provides an advanced master control broadcasting environment showing programme run-down, current and cued events, and run-times. The interface uses easy to use drag and drop technology providing maximum flexibility for adding or deleting programmes. The software automatically calculates new start and finish times for each programme whenever changes are made to the schedules. For the Broadband services, files are sent from ON-AIR playKast into FlipFactory software where they are transcoded into four Internet formats. The ON-AIR software also provides a comprehensive graphics feature-set which enables operators to prepare and manage graphics overlays for playout without having to switch systems or use dedicated graphics tools.
