Avid Xpress DV Drops to $695

New version coming Nov. 15 By Dave Nagel
Avid has announced a price drop for its Xpress DV non-linear editing system. The price drop will coincide with the release of a new version of the software, which is available for preorder now and is expected to ship Nov. 15. The new version, which supports Mac OS X and Windows, is selling for $695.

Avid has not specified what the new version number of the software will be and has not listed any major new features, though the company says the new version supports Apple's G5 systems. General features include a software-based real-time architecture with more than 100 real-time effects that require no rendering, including filter effects, titling, compositing, transitions, picture in picture and color correction. Real-time color correction tools are derived from Avid's Symphony finishing system. The real-time architecture also supports multiple streams. Other features include:

  • Customizable workspaces;
  • NaturalMatch color matching technology;
  • A three-window view that includes previous, current and next frames, along with reference frames and split-screen mode;
  • Customizable vectorscope, waveform monitors and histograms, including luminance and chrominance;
  • Three ChromaWheel HSL color offset wheels (shadows, midtones, highlights);
  • HSL master controls (hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, clip, invert);
  • ChromaCurve interactive graphs with multi-point controls (red, blue, green, master).

Avid Xpress DV includes both Macintosh and WIndows version of the software in the same box, along with Boris Graffiti LTD; Sorenson Squeeze 3 Lite; and Sonic Solutions DVDit! SE.

The new version is expected to ship Nov. 15 and is available for preorder now for $695. In addition, Avid says users of previous version of Xpress DV 3.5 and earlier can now upgrade to Avid Xpress Pro for $295. We'll bring you further details when they become available. For more information, visit
