Avid Ships Avid Unity MediaNet 2.1

New Version Doubles the Number of Supported Clients for Both High- and Low-Resolution Workgroups (October 04, 2001)
Avid today announced the shipment of the Avid Unity MediaNet 2.1 system -- the latest release of Avid's shared media network which adds enhancements to the feature set introduced with version 2.0. MediaNet 2.1 broadens the Avid Unity workgroup to Ethernet-connected editing systems, increasing the total supported client count to 50 simultaneous real-time systems. In addition, Avid has qualified a total of 14 dual stream uncompressed systems on a MediaNet system. Rounding out the release is feature parity between Macintosh and Windows clients including the ability to share media between two dual stream uncompressed systems.

Avid Unity MediaNet 2.1 features

-- PortServer Pro: PortServer Pro allows real time editing clients to access MediaNet workspaces through an Ethernet connection. The NewsCutter XP system is the first editing client supported on PortServer Pro, more than doubling the number of supported clients per MediaNet system from 24 to 50. This feature is a benefit to the broadcast market, which has significant need for multiple editors to simultaneously access the same media.

-- 14 Finishing clients: Previous versions of MediaNet supported up to seven simultaneous editing systems using dual stream uncompressed media. Version 2.1 doubles the number of supported finishing systems to 14. This feature was widely requested by Avid's postproduction customers, who benefit from MediaNet's superior sharing capabilities and require larger workgroups.

-- Sharing for Macintosh dual stream uncompressed systems: The ability to share uncompressed media between two systems is a major advance that was first introduced for Windows systems with version 2.0. This exclusive functionality is now offered for Macintosh systems.

-- Macintosh PortServer support: This feature paves the way for graphics, animation and other Macintosh-based workstations to take advantage of the low-cost Ethernet connectivity provided by PortServer.
