Avid Ships Avid Unity LANshare; Ethernet-based Shared Storage System(December 18, 2001)
Avid Unity LANshare version 1, an all-in-one storage and server unit, includes Avid Unity MediaNet software to support simultaneous sharing of media and enable easier administration. Unity LANshare supports up to 10 single-stream clients or six dual-stream clients using non-finishing compressed resolutions. A 100 Base-T Ethernet backbone makes set-up, administration and maintenance easy for smaller editorial workgroups. In fact, the LANshare architecture virtually eliminates the need for a dedicated system administrator.
"Although Avid Unity LANshare was easy to install, which by itself is a big benefit, we were immediately impressed by its strengths and overall reliability," said Tony Cox, chief engineer at FilmCore Editorial, a commercial editing facility in San Francisco. "As a beta customer, we focused on ease of installation and administration, as well as the timesaving workflow benefits of the systems when fully operational. For me, however, deploying existing Ethernet instead of adding fibre channel offers a time and cost savings that are tough to beat."
Features of Avid Unity LANshare include:
- Support for six simultaneous dual-stream clients at 10:1 or
- Support for 10 single-stream clients at 4:1 or lower

"LANshare, like the other solutions in our Avid Unity family, helps creators share media in ways that speed the production process and enable broaden reuse of valuable media," said Tim Claman, director of product management for Workgroups & Storage at Avid. Because smaller workgroups are looking to benefit from media sharing, we believe the time is right for a lower cost alternative like LANshare."
In conjunction with Avid Unity LANshare 1.0, Avid is also shipping Avid Unity MediaNet 2.2, Media Composer 10.6, Film Composer 10.6, Avid Xpress 4.6, Symphony 3.6 and Media Station XL 1.1 systems.
