Avatar Labs Brings Pauly Shore to Life

(July 13, 2005)

AvatarLabs, a full-service motion graphics and editorial design studio for the entertainment industry headed by noted creative director/producer/designer Rex Cook, has designed and produced the main title open for TBS televisions new reality TV series ?Minding the Store which will debut on that network on Sunday, July 17, 10 PM. Mr. Cook made the announcement.

In ?Minding the Store, comedian/actor Pauly Shore is charged with helping to turn around the flagging fortunes of his mothers legendary landmark comedy nightclub, the Los Angeles based Comedy Store. AvatarLabs client for this project was Shapiro/Grodner Productions, specialists in the production of reality television programming. Pauly Shore said, ?AvatarLabs was on it. I love the graphics in ?Minding the Store. They rock.

Regarding this project, Mr. Cook said, ?Our new main title involved incorporating old home video footage of Pauly Shore in a way that felt playful and current. By incorporating head shots of some of the huge stars that have come through the Comedy Store over the years, including Jim Carrey and David Letterman, and moving those images within a 3D environment, as well as having panels of Paulys old video footage appear in 3D, what could have otherwise played as boring now seems fresh and exciting. Also the client was actively involved, which can lead to a much stronger end-result. And in this case, urging us to use more editorial and helping us find better shots, definitely resulted in a better open. They were great. Very supportive

The AvatarLabs creative team for ?Minding the Store included:

Rex Cook, Creative Director
Aki Narita, Art Director
James Safechuck, Designer

Additional Design  Support:
Laura Primack
Ogy Durham

Hardware/software used for this project included 10 dual g5 Powermacs, Maya, After Effects, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro. AvatarLabs also shot some new, original footage at the Comedy Store using the new HDV Camera from Sony. Said Mr. Cook, ?The high resolution and vibrancy from this new camera, compared to miniDV, is simply amazing.
