Autism United Stresses the Importance of Autism Awareness Month

  (April 02, 2012)

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) April 02, 2012

Every year April is recognized as the National Autism Awareness Month, which provides a special opportunity to educate the public about autism and issues that affect people suffering from this disorder. Autism United will be marking this month to stress the need for creating greater awareness about autism.

The National Autism Awareness Month has been celebrated by the Autism Society since the 1970s. Often diagnosed in the early years of life, autism is a disorder that poses significant social, behavioral and communication challenges to the affected person. Autistic children may engage in repetitive behaviors and face problems speaking with others or making eye contact.

According to statistics, about 1 in every 88 children in the US is affected by the autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Unfortunately, there is no consensus among experts about the possible causes of autism and there is no cure for this disorder. However, different treatments and therapies may help in overcoming developmental disabilities related to behavior and communication. As this disorder affects millions of people across the globe, many lives can be changed by creating greater awareness about its symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. By recognizing the challenges faced by such special people, there would be greater willingness to give them a chance at life and help them build meaningful connections for a better life.

It is important to celebrate the National Autism Awareness Month because it helps to underline the gravity of the situation, says Garreth Dickson, Founder of Autism United. By dedicating a month to raise awareness about the disorder, the need to find treatments, cures and possible prevention is further highlighted. The importance of creating awareness about autism is further defined by the World Autism Awareness Day, which is marked every year on the second day of April. This annual celebration has proved to be crucial in increasing awareness levels among the public and the development of cutting-edge therapies to treat this disorder. Efforts for early detection and educational intervention have yielded encouraging results and provide hope to counter autism, which is already one of the fastest-growing developmental disabilities. With the advancement in technology, even iPhone and iPad applications are being used as educational tools for autistic children. The Autism Awareness Month also helps the families of autistic people to share their inspiring stories and build a healthy support network.

Now termed as a national epidemic, several activities and awareness sessions are held during the Autism Awareness Month to draw the public's concern towards this disorder. Local chapters of the Autism Society encourage people to join the "Vote4Autism" advocacy campaign. People can also show their support for the affected by wearing the Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon. By displaying this symbol on a shirt, car and even Facebook profile, people can help educate others about autism.

Autism United, a body dedicated to promoting autism awareness at a national level, seeks to become a quality resource of information. It provides special education and developmental learning resources, collaborates with top autistic research facilities, shares useful information with the affected, and promotes networking in the community dealing with autism.
