Ascent Media Launches New Feature Film Service In UK

Ascent Media confirms 1.5 million investment in UK DI initiative (October 22, 2004)

Ascent Media UK has announced a 1.5 million investment in Digital Intermediary (D.I.) technology this year, involving UK Group facilities: One; St. Annes, Rushes and Soho Images. This is in response to an increasing studio demand for new digital post-production technology in London. Ascent Media is planning further investment in D.I. of equal significance in 2005, exemplifying the Groups commitment to the format.

Ascent Media is now able to offer a full range of post-production services to Directors, Cinematographers and Producers wishing to work in the UK, utilising existing UK resources and talent and importing the successful processes the group has already developed in Los Angeles for the feature film sector.

As part of this investment, One has opened a dedicated D.I. department at 71 Dean Street, London W1, with fully operational suites mirroring the D.I. division set-up at Company 3 in Los Angeles, where Colourist Stefan Sonnenfeld, with credits including ?Man on Fire, ?Bad Boys 2 and ?Collateral, has been advising UK technicians on the build of the new department, in conjunction with the Ones Managing Director, Paul Jones.

?We have been watching the D.I. space closely over the last few years, says Paul Jones, Ones Managing Director, ?And felt that with the second generation of technology now available we were able to get ahead of the market to build a creative grading solution that offers clients the most powerful tools available in a real-time 2K film resolution environment.

The investment to-date includes the acquisition of two Quantel IQs; a da Vinci 2K colour corrector; an SGI Storage Area Network; Truelight Colour Management system; MTI for dust dusting and an HD infrastructure including VTRs, with more details to be announced shortly.

?This is a very exciting time for Ascent Media, says Brenda Smith, Group Managing Director of Ascent Media, UK. ?With this investment we are now in a position to bring all of the combined assets of Ascent Media together to offer a comprehensive slate of post-production services to the feature film industry in the UK.

Ascent Media UK Feature Film Services
Ascent Media Group feature film services now available in the UK include: film-processing; HD transfers, dailies and previews; Digital Intermediary (D.I.) capabilities; subtitling and close-captioning; sound services; the creation of 2K deliverables; and DVD authoring and design, all supported by Ascent Medias Studio DAM (Digital Asset Management) system.

About Digital Intermediaries (D.I.)
A Digital Intermediary is a digitised version of a film produced by scanning traditionally exposed film negative with a high resolution scanner. This creates a digital file, which directors and cinematographers can endlessly manipulate with a high degree of control without spending the time or money required for lab turnaround. It can be used to create an unlimited number of film negatives for release prints or a digital cinema master. Costly processes and redundancies can be eliminated, as the director approved and colour-timed master can originate 2K trailers; TV spots; recruited screenings; press screenings; international releases and DVDs. The window for editorial changes in the post-production process is lengthened and changes can be made while preserving previous versions of the work. D.I.s can also output to High Definition, Standard Definition and the formats of the future.

About iQ:
iQ is a radical new solution for Digital Intermediary post-production that enhances the current production pipeline with new interactive facilities. From the storyboard right through to final release and the DVD, iQ delivers new tools for pre-visualisation, viewing, assembly and colour correction. With iQ's unique resolution co-existence, no matter what format and resolution the material is in, it can worked with on the same timeline, in real-time. There is no need to convert or compress, so there is never any loss of quality. Further information is available at www.quantel.com

About SGI Infinite Storage:
The SAN system is being used to carry out D.I. work at One using the SGI CXFS shared file system. This allows all of the data to be consolidated onto a central storage system whilst removing the requirement to make multiple copies of data or move data over a LAN. This vastly decreased the production time from Ingest to Archive thus increasing the efficiency within a production facility. Further information is available at www.sgi.com

About da Vinci:
da Vinci Systems, an Acterna Corporation company, provides SDTV, HDTV, data, and digital film color enhancement technology and film restoration products to the worldwide post-production marketplace. In combination with iQ, da Vinci brings new creative and workflow benefits to telecine or tape-to-tape colour correction.
