Artist Victoria Schweizer Supports More Than 30 Charities With Donated WorksThe Philanthropic Painter: The Face of Celebrity Earns Cash for Charities (November 15, 2011)
NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 11/15/11 -- Since Victoria Schweizer returned to painting as an outlet for the grief of losing close friends in the 9/11 attack, she has created over 50 pieces and donated nearly 30 of them for auction to a diverse list of charities. The painter captures pop icons in a fresh Warhol-esque setting that is popular with both collectors and the celebrities themselves. She often has major figures sign "their" paintings to increase the value. Her subjects have included: Jon Stewart, Bill Clinton, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Steve Jobs, Bono, Charlie Sheen, Michael Jackson, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Mick Jagger, Michael Jordan and dozens more.
The following funds, just to name a handful, have benefited from the sale of her works: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Cherub Improv, Charity Water, Knock Foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of North Carolina, and ICAP Charity Day. Schweizer's work has thus far raised in excess of $30k. That figure will get a boost at tonight's Cherub Improv Gala where her Lilac Lucille Ball will be auctioned off.
Noted art collector, author and long-time friend of Andy Warhol, Stuart Pivar said of her work: "If Andy were alive he'd be a subject and collector of hers." Schweizer admits that her charitable viewpoint is grounded in her experience: "I have friends who have lost their children to Leukemia, and I've also been privileged to donate my time to Make-A-Wish Foundation. The joy in children's faces when their 'wish' is granted is something you never forget. My friend Scott Harrison started Charity Water and I have donated to and attended their events since its inception."
Having been a child of the 70's, Schweizer was surrounded and greatly influenced by the works of Warhol and Keith Haring. Drawn to bright colors and over sized pieces, she finds a fun approach to her work. While her artistic philosophy is simple: Paint one and it's on to the next. She has said: "Although some of my artwork has clocked over 50 hours you would never catch me working on something for longer than I had to. The little imperfections add character; correcting them would only take away from my excitement to start on the next project whether for charity or a commissioned work."
Celebrities' observations & endorsements have been as engaging as her work:
JON STEWART upon viewing Schweizer's painting of himself: "Wow, painting portraits and donating them to charity? That's great!"
CHARLIE SHEEN who is a subject and owner of her work: "It's so (expletive deleted) awesome!"
DEAN WINTERS a friend and admirer of her art has said, "Pretty amazing stuff!"
KATE HUDSON gave a laconic, "Oh that's great"
CHAIRMAN of the JOINT CHIEFS of STAFF, GENERAL MARTIN DEMPSEY asked Schweizer before she painted his portrait (to be presented at the Pentagon at year's end), "Great! Can you paint me with more hair?"
