Aptara Produces Best-Selling Children's eBooks for Walker Books & Candlewick Press(February 02, 2010)
FALLS CHURCH, VA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/02/10 -- Aptara, a pioneer in digital publishing solutions, announces the production of best-selling Walker Books and Candlewick Press children's titles as eBooks for mobile distribution via devices such as the Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble Nook, and the Apple iTouch/iPhone/iPad. Walker Book's US subsidiary, Candlewick Press, was named the "fastest growing children's publisher" in the US by Publishers Weekly. In 2010, Candlewick will work with Aptara to produce over 70 more new and backlist titles in the eBook format. Candlewick's current list of Aptara-produced eBook titles includes such modern-day classics as "The Tale of Despereaux," "Because of Winn Dixie" and "The Magician's Elephant."
Of all types of publications, children's titles are the most challenging eBooks to produce because they are so rich with illustrations and graphics. For example, "The Tale of Despereaux" contained 272 pages with over 25 graphic images, in addition to elaborately styled fonts and headings.
"Candlewick's reputation is based on our consistent, high-quality publications, both in terms of writing and artwork," said David Bremser, Director of IT at Candlewick Press. "Needless to say, maintaining that reputation was our first concern when starting down the eBook path. Fortunately Aptara shares the same strict quality standards. Their production staff preserved the appearance of illustrative artwork, as well as our custom stylistic preferences -- exceeding not just our expectations, but our quality specifications. Additionally, Aptara's technical expertise was invaluable when it came to sorting through the myriad of eBook readers, formats, and compatibility complexities, helping make our first foray into the eBook market a successful one."
"Children's eBooks represent a largely untapped market for trade publishers," said Dev Ganesan, President and CEO of Aptara. "Yet it holds enormous potential. As children are raised in an increasingly digital world, it won't be long before we see generations more accustomed to eBooks than printed books. Aptara is proud to be able to preserve the colorful, engaging artwork that fills Candlewick's publications, and to help readers remember the treasured classics of youth -- whether in digital or print."
Source files were provided to Aptara in Quark, InDesign and PDF. eBook outputs included ePUB and .prc (Mobipocket) formats. Candlewick eBook titles are now available for sale through nearly every major eBook retailer. Aptara is also working with Candlewick's parent company, Walker Books, to convert additional children's titles.
Aptara provides digital publishing solutions that deliver significant gains in cost, quality and time-to-market for eBook publishers.
