Apple Updates iBooks

New models get speed bump to 900 MHz By Dave Nagel
Apple has quietly released updates to its current line of iBook notebook computers. The new iBooks continue to be powered by G3 processors, but their speeds have been increased up to 900 MHz.

The new iBook models come in three configurations. These include an 800 MHz G3 with 512 KB level-2 cache running at 800 MHz; 100 MHz system bus; 128 MB RAM, expandable to 640 MB; 30 GB hard drive; CD-ROM; 12.1-inch TFT display supporting XGA resolution. There are also two 900 MHz models offering 512 KB level-2 cache; 100 MHz system bus; 40 GB hard drive; and a combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. They're differentiated by the size of their screens (12.1-inch and 14.1-inch) and base RAM (128 MB and 256 MB, both expandable to 640 MB).

All of the new models include a FireWire 400 port, two USB ports, a 56 Kbps modem and an ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 graphics card with 32 MB DDR SDRAM. In base configurations, all of the models are AirPort-ready. A custom configuration is also available that includes an AirPort card built in.

The new iBooks start at $999 for the base 800 MHz model. The 12.1-inch 900 MHz model sells for $1,299. And the 14.1-inch 900 MHz model sells for $1,499. For more information, visit
