Apple has updated X11 to beta 0.2. X11 is Apple's an X Window SYstem that provides support for X11R6.6 technologies, allowing users to run X11-based software. The new version adds a number of improvements, including support for Gnome and KDE hints. It's available now as a free download for Mac OS X.

According to Apple's release notes, the new version of X11 now adds cascading windows and supports copying and pasting between X11 and other windowing systems. Other new features include:

  • A menu in the Dock shows X11 applications;
  • Added a non-click-to-focus function;
  • Support for Mac OS X international keyboard mapping;
  • Support for -iconic;
  • New preference option to control xauth use;
  • Support for Move WIndow events from Virtual Desktop;
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes

Please note that when installing X11 0.2, you should make a backup of your older software. If you have XDarwin installed, version the X11 0.2 installer can cause problems, specifically replacing Aqua-style windows with XDarwin-style windows. (This can be fixed by reinstalling the software and customizing the installation to use all of the software components.) You will also need to trash your previous X11 0.1 launcher manually. (It's located in the Applications folder.)
