Apple Updates X11

X Window System gets functionality, interface improvements By Dave Nagel
Apple's X11 has been updated to version 0.3. X11 is Apple's implementation of the X Windows System for Mac OS X, allowing users to run applications like CinePaint and Gimp, among others, alongside the Mac OS X environment. The update is available now as a free download.

X11 is an X11R6.6 environment that's designed to blend with the standard Mac OS X interface, including an Aqua-like appearance, Quartz window manager, libraries and basic utilities. The new 0.3 version adds some functionality and interface improvements, such as:

  • 8-bit visual plane support;
  • Command-Q to quit and an option to receive no warning dialog when quitting;
  • Several bug fixes, including keyboard mappings with dead keys;
  • Windows resizable to any size;
  • Hardware-accelerated scrolling in 16-bit mode.

X11 0.3 is available now as a free download. For more information or to download the software, visit
