Apple Revamps PowerBook Lineup

15-inch model added; new configurations all around By Dave Nagel
Apple has revamped its PowerBook lineup with the introduction of a new 15-inch model, which joins newly revamped 17- and 12-inch models. The new 17- and 15-inch PowerBooks are available now, with the updated 12-inch model expected to ship later this month.

The revamped 17-inch PowerBook offers a 1.33 GHz G4 processor; SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW); 512 MB DDR 333 MHz SDRAM; Mobility Radeon graphics with 64 MB RAM, built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth, 80 GB hard drive and a wide range of I/O, including gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0 and FireWire 800. It sells for $2,999.

The 15-inch PowerBook includes a 15.2-inch display (1,280 x 854) and is available in two configurations. One offers a 1.25 GHz G4 processor and all the same specs as the 17-inch model. It's available for $2,599. The other 15-inch model includes a 1.0 GHz G4 processor, a combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) drive and smaller base RAM and hard drive configurations. It ships stock with 256 MB 333 MHz DDR SDRAM and a 60 GB hard drive. The 1.0 GHz model sells for $1,999.

The 12-inch PowerBook also receives an update. It will be available in two configurations, both running a 1.0 GHz G4 processor and sporting 256 MB 266 MHz DDR SDRAM; a 40 GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive; 12.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1,024 x 768; Nvidia GeForce FC Go 5200 graphics with 32 MB RAM; FireWire 400; Bluetooth wireless connectivity; and USB 2.0. (AirPort Extreme is not included.) The models are differentiated by their optical storage. One includes a SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) and sells for $1,799. The other includes a combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive and sells for $1,599. Both will be available later this month.
