Apple Previews Next-Generation OS X: 'Jaguar'

Jobs urges developers to abandon OS 9 By Dave Nagel
At the Worldwide Developers Conference today, Apple outlined several new technologies to make their way into a new Mac OS X release, scheduled for late summer. CEO Steve Jobs also proclaimed the death of Mac OS 9 for developers and urged WWDC attendees to abandon OS 9 development.

The new version of Mac OS X, code-named "Jaguar," is expected to arrive this summer. "Jaguar is packed with incredible new features that Mac OS X users are going to love, including our iChat instant messaging software," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Jaguar takes the world's highest-volume UNIX-based operating system to the next level, adding amazing new technologies never before seen in any operating system." New features in Jaguar include:

  • QuickTime 6, with MPEG-4 video and AAC audio streaming;
  • iChat, Apple's new AIM-compatible instant messaging software that is built into Mac OS X and integrated with the new Mail and Address Book applications;
  • Rendezvous, Apple's proposed new industry standard for automatic discovery of computers, devices and services on IP networks;
  • Address Book, Apple's new system-wide database for managing contact information;
  • An improved Finder, with spring-loaded folders and new "instant searching;"
  • Sherlock 3;
  • Quartz Extreme, a hardware-accelerated Quartz graphics and compositing engine for 2D and 3D;
  • Increased compatibility with Windows networks with SMB browsing and sharing and built-in PPTP VPN security.

Developer previews of Jaguar went to WWDC attendees today, including a preview release of QuickTime 6.
