20-inch iMac also debuts By Dave Nagel
Apple today launched a new model in its line of Power Mac G5s, a dual 1.8 GHz unit, and also lowered the price on the single-processor 1.6 GHz G5. The company also introduced a new 20-inch iMac with a 1.25 GHz G4 processor. All are available now.

The new dual 1.8 GHz G5 replaces the single-processor G5 in Apple's mid-range workstation lineup. It includes dual 1.8 GHz G5 processors with dual independent 900 MHz front-side busses; 512 MB DDR RAM (128-bit, 400 MHz, 128-bit); AGP 8x graphics; a 160 GB Serial ATA drive (7,200 RPM); an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics card with 64 MB DDR RAM; a 4x SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW); one 64-bit, 133 MHz PCI-X slot; and two 64-bit, 100 MHz PCI slots. It sells for $2,499, $100 more than the single-processor model it replaces.

The price of the single-processor 1.6 GHz G5 has also been lowered to $1,799 (previously $1,999). It includes 256 MB RAM, 80 GB Serial ATA hard drive, 800 MHz front-side bus, 333 MHz dual-channel 128-bit DDR memory, four DIMM slots (up to 4 GB RAM), three PCI slots (64-bit, 33 MHz) and an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra with 64 MB DDR RAM.

The dual 2 GHz G5, at $2,999, remains the top-end model.

All of the G5s include one FireWire 800 port, two FireWire 400 ports, three USB 2.0 ports, Toslink optical audio in and out, stereo minijack audio in and out, gigabit Ethernet, a built-in 56 Kbps modem and support for AirPort and Bluetooth wireless networking. They also ship with Apple's base suite of consumer software, including iDVD, iMovie and others.

Apple has also launched a new model in its iMac line. It includes a 20-inch widescreen LCD display with a resolution of 1,680 x 1,050. It sports a single 1.25 GHz G4 processor, 256 MB of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM, a 4x SuperDrive, Nvidia GeForce FX Ultra graphics card with 64 MB video memory, two FireWire ports, three USB 2.0 ports, an 80 GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive (7,200 RPM), Apple Pro speakers and internal support for Bluetooth and AirPort Extreme wireless networking. It sells for $2,199.
