Apple Announces New iPods

New versions offer up to 30 GB storage, AAC audio support By Dave Nagel
Apple has started shipping new models in its lineup of iPod music players. The third-generation iPods offer capacities up to 30 GB and a new dock with audio out for connecting to a stereo or computer. They also gain compatibility with AAC audio, in addition to MP3, for supporting audio downloaded from Apple's new iTunes Music Store service, also announced today.

The 15 GB and 30 GB models come with a new dock for connecting to Mac and Windows systems. The dock also includes an audio line out for connection to a home stereo or powered speakers. The iPods recharge automatically when connected to a computer and automatically synchronize with digital music libraries on a computer.

The new iPods also offer a solid-state navigation wheel and backlit buttons with enhanced touch sensitivity; a form factor that's now thinner than two CDs; a customizable main menu; and an "On the Go" playlist feature for building playlists directly on the iPod itself.

Apple's new iPods will be available May 2 in three configurations. The 10 GB model will sell for $299. The 15 GB model will sell for $399. ANd the 30 GB model will sell for $499.
