Apple Announces Cinema Tools for Final Cut Pro

DVD Studio Pro gets update to 1.5 By Dave Nagel
Apple today announced two of the new creative tools it will be showing off at next week's NAB convention in Las Vegas. These include a new "Cinema Tools" package for Final Cut Pro and a 1.5 update for DVD Studio Pro, which is available now.

The Cinema Tools package for FCP 3 enhances Final Cut Pro 3's 24 FPS editing with support for film cut lists and 24-frame EDLs for high-definition video. According to Apple, Cinema Tools technology was used to edit two upcoming Miramax Film releases, Full Frontal and Blue Car. It's targeted toward filmmakers who shoot and finish with 35 mm or 16 mm film but want to edit in Final Cut Pro system. It converts telecined content to its native 24 FPS frame rate for editing and then generates a 24 FPS cut list for negative conform.

Cinema Tools for Final Cut Pro will be available in May for $999. It requires Final Cut Pro 3.0.2, Mac OS X version 10.1.3, a 300 MHz G3 or G4 with built-in FireWire and 256 MB of RAM.

On the DVD front, Apple finally released DVD Studio Pro 1.5, an update to the company's DVD authoring suite. Apple has been fairly quietly showing off the software for several months at trade shows, but has only just now released the update. The new release brings native operation in Mac OS X, taking advantage of the operating system's preemptive multitasking to compile projects and encode MPEG in the background.

DvD Studio Pro 1.5 also enhances menu functionality and allows for DVD-ROM data to be included on the disc. The software tracks the size of the project to ensure that it will fit on the 4.7 GB DVD-R discs supported by the Pioneer 103 and 104 "SuperDrive" burners included with recent G4 desktops. The software includes a QuickTime MPEG plugin and Dolby Digital 5.1 encoding software. It can output to both DVD-R and DLT tape. And it can automatically integrate chapter markers from Final Cut Pro.

Version 1.5 includes Corel Photo-Paint and Bias Peak DV for Mac OS X. DVD Studio Pro sells for $999. The upgrade costs $199. For more information, visit
