Apple Acquires Emagic

Flagship product, Logic Audio, to become Mac-only application By Frank Moldstad
Filling a key gap in its lineup of professional production applications, Apple has acquired Emagic, maker of the audio recording and editing application Logic and other audio products.

Apple announced it will suspend Windows development of Emagic products on Sept. 30, with Emagic operating as a wholly owned Apple division. Macintosh-based products account for about 65 percent of Emagic's current revenues.

With a user base of more than 200,000 people worldwide, Logic is one of the more popular applications used for professional audio. The latest version of its flagship program, Logic Platinum 5, was released in Fall 2001. It is designed for MIDI and audio manipulation, with up to 192 tracks of audio playback at 24 bit/96 kHz rates. It incorporates a digital mixer capable of mixing Surround Sound up to 7.1. It features extensive audio hardware support including TDM (Mac OS), OMF and OpenTL support.

An OSX version of Logic is in development but has not yet been released.

Emagic most recently announced ProTools HD Support for Logic Platinum, making it possible for users who have an installed copy of Logic Platinum 5.1.3 (or higher) for the Mac and the new vesion of ProTools to achieve sampling rates up to 192 kHz. The combination also increases the track capacity and takes advantage of the increased I/O capacity of the PTHD system. Efficiencies in using the new TDM II architecture are also achieved through improved use of the TDM time slots.

Other Emagic products include:

  • ES1 and ES2, a pair of software synthesizers;
  • EXS24 and EXSP24, two VST 2.0 samplers;
  • EVP88 and EVP 73, vintage pianos for Logic and VST 2.0;
  • EVB3, Emagic Vintage B3 for Logic;
  • EVD6, Emagic Vintage D6 for Logic;
  • HTDM, HTDM Software Instruments;
  • SoundDiver, a Universal MIDI device editor and librarian program;
  • WaveBurner Pro, an audio CD mastering suite;
  • Samplitude, a disc recording and mastering system;
  • EPIC TDM, a plugin collection for TDM.

    The company also manufactures several hardware products, including Logic controllers, MIDI interfaces (Unitor8, AMT8 and MT4) and USB audio interfaces (EMI 2|6 and EMI 6|2).

    Apple has been assembling a portfolio of professional content creation applications for the past year. Notable acquisitions have included Spruce, maker of DVD authoring systems; Nothing Real, maker of high end compositing software; Final Cut Pro, which it bought as a program named Key Grip from Macromedia several years ago; and Silicon Grail, maker of professional compositing and effects software.
