Ann Bowers Elected New Chairperson of The Tech Museum's Board of DirectorsTop Goal to 'Remake' the Museum (May 22, 2009)
SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/22/09 -- Eminent philanthropist and education advocate Ann Bowers took over as chairperson of The Tech Museum's Board of Directors today following a unanimous vote in which she became only the second woman ever to lead the influential panel.
Bowers is determined to make her mark as the museum is set to undergo dramatic change in the coming years. Her first order of business is to deepen board engagement in the museum and accelerate agreement on gallery renewal.
"It's definitely time to remake The Tech Museum. It is a necessary and smart thing to do," Bowers said. "We have to refresh content, emphasize our ability to serve local schools and explore ways to reach out to the community in ways never done before."
And she's no stranger to taking on major, groundbreaking commitments. Bowers is a founding trustee of the renowned Noyce Foundation, which supports initiatives to advance improvements in teaching and learning math, science and literacy. Previously, she served as first Director for Personnel of Intel Corporation and the first Vice President of Human Resources of Apple Computer. She is a Trustee Emeritus of Cornell University, where she received her B.A. Bowers was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Santa Clara, where she was a trustee for nearly twenty years.
Bowers, who succeeds Frank Quattrone, will serve in the post for two years. Prior to her election, the only other woman to hold the post was Yvette del Prado from 1992 - 1995.
Peter Friess, president of The Tech Museum, praised Quattrone for his leadership in guiding the museum through the economic downturn and clearing the way for its future successes. Bowers, he said, would play a critical role helping to position the institution as one of the premier science education centers in the land.
"The Tech Museum has long had the good fortune of being surrounded by leaders dedicated to helping us to clarify and expand our vision for the future," Friess said. "Now, as Ann takes the reins, we fully expect to capitalize on her fresh, thoughtful ideas as we direct the efforts and resources of the museum toward even greater opportunities."
