Alpha Dogs Helps Take U.S. Open to DVD

Facility Provides Audio and Video Post Service for Three Discs Major Tournaments (September 20, 2007)

DMN Newswire--2007-9-20-- Alpha Dogs recently wrapped up post production work on a 1-hour DVD recapping the 2007 U.S. Open golf championships. Written and produced by Tony Richards of Nouveau Richards Productions for Ten Mayflower Productions and the United States Golf Association, the disc recaps the drama, the beauty and the great challenge of the golf championships, won by Angel Cabrera in an upset, 1-shot victory over Jim  Furyk and Tiger Woods.
Alpha Dogs provided creative editorial, final editorial, graphics, sound design and audio post production services. The studio provided a similar post package for two other USGA DVD releases, recapping the 2007 U.S. Seniors Open and 2007 U.S. Womens Open.

The off-line cut was prepared by Alpha Dogs editor Rosanne Tan, working from media supplied by NBC from its broadcast of the 4-day championship. This year, for the first time, the network captured the broadcast to EVS XFile removable hard drives and, as a result, all of the source media had to be converted to QuickTime format before Tan could begin editing the show with Final Cut Pro.

Tan worked hand in hand with Richards, who also wrote the script, in preparing the cut. Their aim was to capture the atmosphere of the storied golf tournament, while recounting all the twists and turns of Cabreras stunning, come-from-behind victory.

"Richards knows how he wants to tell the story, so my role is to find moments that best illustrate the points he wants to make," Tan said. "Editing a golf championship is not like editing an entertainment program where you have the luxury of alternate angles and retakes, but there are ways to make the narrative seamless and as engaging as possible."

NBC sportscaster Dan Hicks provided the voice-over for the disc. Hicks was recorded at HSR in New York City York and those elements were returned to Alpha Dogs for mixing. Re-recording mixer Marcus Pardo performed that work on a Digidesign ProTools|HD 2 system. Pardo also supplemented the location sound with sound design elements and music.

Pardo culled golf hits, crowd noise and other elements from Alpha Dogs extensive sound effects library. "Our aim was to enhance the drama of the event without adding anything that might sound artificial," Pardo explained. "I have worked on this series for three years, and am also a big golf fan, so I have learned to add just enough to help tell the story."

This same team of Nouveau Richards Productions, Ten Mayflower Productions and AlphaDogs has produced together, not just four years of the U.S. Open Golf series DVDs. but also the only Olympic highlight videos for both ice skating and gymnastics. Other notable productions from this team include a variety of gymnastics and skating series including the Breeders Cup Horse Racing program. "The beauty of utilizing the talent at AlphaDogs is the ?virtual work relationship," observes Richards. "I was at AlphaDogs for final review of offline and online, however I was able to review cuts via files mailed to me. As a producer AlphaDogs technological and creative abilities saved us valuable time.  They embrace every project as if it were the most important one theyve ever taken on and dedicate every possible resource to ensure a greatest end result."
