Alleged Zeta horse trainer held despite bail orderJudge sets bail for Texas horse trainer in alleged Zetas plot; held while government appeals
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ' A Texas judge ruled a horse trainer charged with conspiring to launder money for Mexico's feared Zetas drug cartel should be released on bond.
But Eusevio Maldonado Huitron (ew-SAY'-vee-oh mayl'-don-ah-DOH' wee-tree-OHN') will remain in custody while federal prosecutors appeal the decision Monday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Andy Austin.
Maldonado Huitron was arrested last week as part of a nationwide sweep that included two reputed Zetas leaders.
Prosecutors argued that Zetas' retaliations if Maldonado Huitron is freed could be so severe that it would threaten the entire community.
But his attorney countered that the Zetas have no reason to target a horse trainer.
Austin set conditions for Maldonado Huitron's release but didn't make them public. The appeal means his order won't take effect until it's considered by a U.S. district judge.
