Alias To Ship Maya 4.5 for Mac OS XUpdate coming in September
"Maya 4.5 for Mac OS X is proof of Alias|Wavefront's continued commitment to unparalleled innovation for Macintosh users," said Alias|Wavefront President Doug Walker in a prepared statement. "The release features an enormous number of developments across every aspect of the product based on feedback from some of the world's best 3D artists. Sales of Maya on the Mac have been extremely strong to date, significantly exceeding even our high expectations; and so, we are very proud to share the innovations of Maya 4.5 first with the talented artistic community gathered at Macworld New York."
Apple CEO Steve Jobs spilled the beans on Maya 4.5 earlier this morning during his keynote address at the Macworld Expo in New York. He also said that the Mac now accounts for 25 percent of Alias|Wavefront's Maya customer base, despite the fact that Maya Complete for the Mac had lagged behind versions for other platforms.
Maya 4.5 for Mac OS X includes improvements in modeling, workflow, animation and rendering, according to Alias. Specific enhancements include:
- UI improvements for better workflow;
- An improved lasso tool;
- Automatic backup on save;
- Progress bar and new heads-up display options;
- True 3D paint technology now incorporated into Maya for Mac OS X and integrated with Maya Paint Effects;
- Migration of the modeling functionality of Maya Unlimited into Maya Complete (including advanced NURBS tools and true hierarchical subdivision surfaces with improved texturing options;
- A new Smooth Proxy tool;
- Enhanced snapping tools;
- New animation features, including offset attributes on constraints;
- Volume lighting and ramp shader rendering effects.
Rendering enhancements new to those upgrading from Maya 3.5 include multi-processor support for rendering and interactive preview rendering.
Maya Complete 4.5 will be available in September for $1,999 for Mac OS X, Windows, IRIX and Linux. It will include modeling, rendering, animation, dynamics, Maya Artisan, Maya Paint Effects and Maya Embedded Language (MEL). Upgrades will run $699.
