Alias Releases Maya PLE as Free Download

Personal edition of 3D suite includes new rendering options, animation tools By Dave Nagel
Alias Systems has released Maya Personal Learning Edition (PLE) 5.0, a non-commercial version of the 3D modeling and animation suite based on the latest Maya software. The software shipped in July on CD, but is now available as a free download. It supports Mac OS X and Windows.

Maya PLE 5.0 offers most of the features found in the commercial version of Maya, including several new technologies, such as a new hardware rendering option for use with the latest generation of graphics cards; a unified rendering workflow; animation enhancements to constraints, forward/inverse kinematics and ghosting; Maya Paint Effects to polygon conversion; and an improved polygon reduction method for making game models and MODs.

The Maya Personal Learning Edition restricts users to non-commercial applications through the display of a watermark on images as well as through the use of a special non-commercial file format. It does not use standard plugins and does not include the Maya API.

Maya PLE 5.0 is available as a free download for Mac OS X and Windows. A packaged version that includes training materials is also available for $19.95. For more information, visit
