Ala. immigration battle recalls civil rights pastAP Enterprise: Alabama's immigration battle revives ugly images of state's civil rights past
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) ' The epicenter of the fight over the nation's patchwork of immigration laws is not along the Mexico border ' it's the Deep South state of Alabama.
The nation's strictest immigration law has resurrected ugly images from Alabama's days as the nation's battleground for civil rights a half-century ago. And it's a near certainty that the law will become a test case for the U.S. Supreme Court, even though Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Utah and South Carolina have also passed similar laws.
Opponents have been especially vocal about one provision, which has been temporarily blocked, that requires schools to check the immigration status of students. But the law's supporters say the law is needed to ensure illegal immigrants aren't taking jobs from legal residents.
