Adobe Ships InDesign CS PageMaker Edition

Plug-in Pack also available for InDesign users By Dave Nagel
Adobe today released InDesign CS PageMaker Edition, a special version of the company's page-layout software for users migrating from the now-discontinued PageMaker. The new version is available for Mac OS X and Windows. Adobe has also made available the PageMaker Plug-in Pack as a separate purchase for InDesign users and says it expects to make the Plug-in Pack standard fare with the Creative Suite Premium and Standard Editions later this spring.

InDesign CS PageMaker Edition includes the full InDesign CS application, along with add-on tools to bring major PageMaker functionality over to InDesign, as well as training materials and pre-designed templates. We have an in-depth "first look" at the new tools in InDesign CS PageMaker Edition, which you can read here. (We'll also publish a formal review of the software in the near future.) The new version adds new components via the PageMaker Plug-in Pack, which include: data merge capabilities; imposition via ALAP's InBooklet SE, with support for 2-up saddle stitch, 2-up perfect bound and 2-, 3- and 4-up consecutive styles; a new PageMaker palette for accessing common document functions; a new Position tool, with functionality similar to that of PageMaker's Crop tool; PageMaker keyboard shortcuts; automated bullet and number lists; and a publication converter for accessing PageMaker 6.0 to 7.x documents and templates.

It also includes a new Template Browser window, with functionality similar to that of Photoshop's File Browser. And it offers more than 80 professionally designed templates and training materials designed specifically for PageMaker users migrating to InDesign. (Training includes tutorials, video presentations and special online help.)

InDesign CS PageMaker Edition is available now for Mac OS X and Windows. The full version requires a valid PageMaker serial number and costs $349. The educational license runs $219. Additionally, the PageMaker Plug-in Pack, which includes all of the new features, is available as a separate purchase for users of InDesign CS for $49. Adobe says the additional software "is expected to be included with the Adobe Creative Suite Premium Edition and Creative Suite Standard Edition in spring 2004." For more information, visit
