Adobe Illustrator 10 To Get OS X Support

New release scheduled for fourth quarter By Dave Nagel
Adobe has started previewing the forthcoming version of its illustration and vector graphics package, Illustrator 10. The new release, which the company says will support Mac OS X 10.1 (as well as OS 9), is scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter of this year. Illustrator will be the first of Adobe's products to support OS X. The second will be InDesign 2.0, which is scheduled for release in early 2002. (See separate story.)

Illustrator 10 gains a number of new features and workflow improvements. These include:

  • Symbols to create repeating graphics
  • Vector and raster-based slicing
  • Slice-by-slice optimization
  • Enhanced Macromedia Flash (SWF) support
  • SVG import and enhanced export
  • Editable SVG effects
  • Selective type antialiasing
  • Liquify tools, enveloping, and warping
  • Symbolism tools to manipulate symbols interactively
  • Four new drawing tools for lines, arcs, grids, and polar grids
  • Enhanced compound-shape controls
  • Flare tool for reflections and lens flare effects
  • Data-driven graphics to generate multiple versions of a design
  • Enhanced performance and more compact files
  • Scripting support
  • Magic wand tool to select a range of objects with similar attributes
  • Asset management functionality
  • Metadata support Take advantage of tight integration
  • Compound-path compatibility
  • Rollover and animation information preserved in linked Photoshop files
  • Direct editing of native Illustrator files in Adobe InDesign
  • Illustrator network publishing tools supported in Adobe GoLive
  • Layers preserved in Adobe After Effects.
