Adaptec Announces Low-Profile ZCR PCI RAID Card(August 28, 2001)
The Adaptec 2005S "RAID Blade," introduced in May, and a new low-profile PCI RAID controller announced today, are being designed into more than 20 high-density and pedestal servers from companies such as Acer, Advantech, Arima, ASUSTeK, Gigabyte, Iwill, MSI, Supermicro, Tyan, and Quanta, the company said. The first products featuring Adaptec's new ZCR technology are expected to be announced next quarter.
Adaptec's newest ZCR controller is the industry's smallest zero channel PCI RAID card, and has been sampling with OEMs since earlier this month. In addition to its small, 2.5" x 6.6" form factor, the new 64-bit/66MHz controller uses one-fourth the power of comparable one- and two-channel RAID cards, and is priced as low as one-third the cost.
The credit-card-sized Adaptec 2005S, which has been shipping to OEMs since July, adds advanced RAID functionality to supported motherboard platforms.
Both ZCR cards are the first of their kind to be compatible with both future Intel and EMRL (Embedded RAID Logic)-based merchant motherboards, and are ideal for high-density servers, where cost and space considerations had previously limited RAID adoption.
EMRL enables Adaptec's ZCR controllers to leverage the server platform's on-board SCSI channels, providing OEMs with an exceptionally cost-effective way to migrate from SCSI to full-featured RAID, with the flexibility of an add-in card. During early design cycles, OEMs can implement EMRL and later offer upgrade options.
To accelerate the adoption of EMRL and its ZCR controllers, Adaptec has initiated a complete design review of early OEM implementations, and is providing full functionality and compatibility testing.
Adaptec's newest low-profile controller provides full RAID 0, 0+1, 1, 5, 0+5 and JBOD-level configuration capabilities, can support up to 30 SCSI devices, and is compatible with most major operating systems, including Windows, Unix, Linux and Free BSD.
