AWGUA SIGGRAPH Event Becomes Free PartyA chance to network and make new industry contacts (August 02, 2001)
The party, called [email protected], will be held at the Mayan Theatre on 1038 South Hill Street in downtown Los Angeles.
Pre-registration is mandatory for guaranteed entry--only the first 1,000 registrants are guaranteed to get in. The party begins at 6 p.m. Those who do not pre-register may be allowed in after 9 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis depending on the crowd.
The seminars scheduled as part of the Users Group meeting will still be held, however, taking place at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel from Aug. 13-15 during SIGGRAPH. The content normally shown at AWGUA will be at the Alias|Wavefront booth during SIGGRAPH. Those who had pre-registered for the previous event, called the AWGUA 2001 Freak Show, have a choice of applying their money to more seminars or a refund.
The Freak Show, a $200 day-long event, became a free party after discussions with users about the registration fees. "We had planned on producing an event much like the one last year in New Orleans," said Mark Sylvester, Alias|Wavefront Ambassador and host of the event, said in a letter to the membership.
"However, due to severe economic restraints this year, dwindling sponsorships, and a daunting production budget, we had to institute a charge to cover the expense of the day. Many of you have been quite vocal and have suggested that a charge of 200 dollars is just too much. You pointed out that the economic situation has affected you and your place of work as well."
Sylvester continued, "The great thing about our user community is that you have always been helpful in sharing your thoughts and opinions and we value your point of view. Many of you commented that the most important element of the AWGUA experience is the opportunity to socialize and network with other 3D users."
The social format of [email protected] will give networking opportunities, equally important to students trying to get into the industry and to veterans who've recently been laid off. The event will feature job boards, videotape playback stations, and workstations for people to show their work to potential employers and various companies that are recruiting.
