ATTO Announces Dual-Channel Ultra320 SCSI Product

ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D dual-channel Ultra320 PCI Express adapter with up to 320 MB/sec. per channel (October 20, 2005)

ATTO Technology, Inc., a global leader of storage connectivity and infrastructure solutions for data-intensive computing environments, announces the development of a dual-channel host adapter utilizing Ultra320 SCSI and next-generation PCI Express (PCIe) technology. Offering throughput of up to 320 MB/sec. per channel for a combined speed of up to 640 MB/sec., the ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D SCSI Host Bus Adapter (HBA) is the latest addition to the ATTO ExpressPCI family of high-performance SCSI host adapters for data-intensive environments.

The ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D SCSI Host Adapter combines x4 PCI Express technology and Ultra320 speeds for high performance server environments and applications such as high definition video. PCI Express is a low-cost, highly scalable serial technology that delivers added performance by increasing the I/O capacity while eliminating bus contention. This allows for faster and more efficient performance with reduced I/O bottlenecks. The ExpressPCI UL5D incorporates ATTO's exclusive ADS Technology which moves large blocks of data faster and more efficiently on the PCI bus than any other host adapter on the market.

The UL5D HBA provides users with the Ultra320 features of packetized SCSI and Quick Arbitration Select (QAS), pre-compensation techniques and Flow Control that allow data to be transferred faster. Packetized SCSI transfers grouped commands, messages and status bytes at full data-transfer speeds, reducing the protocol overhead. In addition, packetization allows the transfer of several commands or data from multiple I/O processes in a single connection. By eliminating bus free time, QAS reduces the device selection time and bus arbitration. These advanced SCSI features increase reliability and efficiency and lead to increased productivity in environments such as high-end video environments that need to take advantage of the superior bandwidth of PCIe.

The UL5D HBA is backward compatible with earlier SCSI versions and is best suited for Enterprise servers and high-end workstations running high-volume, mission-critical applications such as messaging and databases. Because of its next-generation technology, the UL5D will provide more options for performance enhancements over PCI and PCI-X, and will leverage existing investments in legacy technology.
