AJA Ships Io FireWire Capture System

New unit supports Apple's Final Cut Pro 4 By Dave Nagel
AJA Video Systems has begun shipping limited quantities of Io, an uncompressed audio and video FireWire capture device. It offers 8- and 10-bit capture for broadcast-quality production and supports Apple's Final Cut Pro 4, which is expected to be available this weekend.

Io, which debuted at the NAB convention earlier this year, connects to a Macintosh G4 desktop or notebook through a FireWire interface. It supports component and composite analog video, SDI digital video, balanced analog audio, AES/EBU digital audio, optical audio, RS-422 machine control and genlock. And it was designed to complement Apple's Xserve and Xserve RAID in a rack or on a desktop. Io is also the first device designed to take advantage of the new multi-channel audio architecture of Final Cut Pro 4 and was, according to AJA, developed in close cooperation with Apple to work with Final Cut Pro 4.

Io has begun shipping now. The company said it will appear in select Apple Store retail locations this weekend for the debut of Final Cut Pro 4. It will sell for $2,290. For more information, visit
