AJA Key To Post Pipeline For Several Films In 2006 Sundance Line-Up

Indie filmmakers and post-production facilities again opt for AJA technologies (January 19, 2006)
Sundance Film Festival (January 19, 2006) AJA Video Systems, Inc. announced today the continued rise in popularity of AJA- and Apple Final Cut Pro-based solutions among independent filmmakers.  Multiple selections at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival have utilized AJAs KONA 2 HD uncompressed video capture cards, allowing projects to be finished efficiently at a high standard of quality for Sundance screening.

The films range from feature-length documentaries to shorts, and include: Salvage, Destricted (finished at Offhollywood Digital); Who Killed the Electric Vehicle?, Transaction, Thin and The Ground Truth (finished at PlasterCITY Digital Post) and Leonard Cohen Im Your Man (finished via Different by Design and HD Cinema).  KONA 2, AJA solution utilized by these filmmakers, allows creative professionals to work at SD, HD and dual-link HD resolutions and is also capable of HD/SD up- and down-conversion.

Offhollywood Digital co-produced and posted the feature-length horror thriller Salvage, shot using a Canon XL2 with a Pro 35 adapter and 35mm Prime lenses. The facility edited the film on a Final Cut Pro system, finishing in 10-bit uncompressed via KONA 2.  Color correction was done directly in Final Cut, using Magic Bullet plug-ins to create a creepy, surreal look and Shake 4 to do a pull out to 23.98 frames per second for Sundance delivery.  The post house also used its Kona2 system on Destricted, which was co-directed by Kids auteur Larry Clark.

?We are huge fans of AJA products such as KONA 2 and are currently beta testers of the companys impressive new XENA cards, said Mark Pederson, Owner, Offhollywood Digital.  ?We looked into all the options when we opened this shop, and found AJA offered the industrys most reliable and easy-to-use technology.  Plus, they are great to work with and provide simply the best customer service.

Films at Off Hollywood are typically shot on Varricam HD and edited and finished using Final Cut Pro with AJA capture.  Next year the studio, which also produces its own content, plans to move towards finishing in 2K.

PlasterCITY Digital optimized workflow with KONA 2 cards to finish four 2006 Sundance projects.  Thin, a documentary that examines the world of eating disorders; Who Killed the Electric Vehicle?, a documentary detailing the rise and fall of the electric car; The Ground Truth, a documentary about soldiers returning home from Iraq, and Transaction, a 16mm short.

Production and post facility Different by Design (DXD) and HD equipment provider and consulting studio HD Cinema completed the HD online and conform for the Sundance 2006 film Leonard Cohen Im Your Man.  The documentary was directed by Lian Lunson and on-lined by Bobby Maruvada.

?The AJA cards deal with multiple resolutions and multiple frame rates flawlessly and seamlessly?this is a huge advantage for the type of productions that I typically work on, commented Maruvada.

Over the past few years, more and more Sundance films have opted for the high-performance and cost-effective HD workflows available with AJA products and Apple Final Cut Pro.  Recent examples include Sundance 2005 successes Me And You And Everyone We Know and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.

"Watching the AJA products migrate into so many markets so effectively over the past few years has been highly satisfying, but none more than our overwhelming success with the independent feature market, said Ted Schilowitz, Worldwide Product Manager, Desktop Video Engines, AJA Video.  ?The ability to provide the kind of quality and reliability that was only possible on much more expensive and complex systems not all that long ago, and the amount of projects that touch AJA desktop hardware like the Kona  and Io at Sundance each year are astounding.  We are quite pleased that AJA has helped play a valuable role in a number of great films in this years Sundance Film festival, and will continue to provide products that help these filmmakers realize their vision economically and at pristine 10 bit HD quality."
