ABC and CBS Affiliates Automate Live Newscasts

(July 17, 2001)
ParkerVision, Inc. announced today that ABC affiliate WWTI-TV and CBS affiliate WWNY-TV are using its PVTV STUDIO NEWS automated system for live news production. The Watertown, New York stations report cleaner shows, improved graphics, cost savings and increased news programming opportunities following each station's launch of the PVTV live video production system. Additionally, WWNY has been sharing its system with local FOX affiliate WNYF-TV since April for its 10 p.m. half-hour newscast. All major network affiliates local to Watertown, New York are now using its PVTV STUDIO NEWS(TM) automated system for live news production.

"Economically, PVTV gives us the ability as a small station to produce more local product because we're able to provide more news with our smaller staff," said Kimberly Randolph, Director of Operations, WWNY. "As a small station, we feel very fortunate to be a part of this technology. With the cost of producing news programming becoming astronomical, PVTV represents a step into the future. I believe many stations will follow suit in an effort to provide the best possible programming to the viewers. At the same time, our shows are more error-free than they were previously. With PVTV, the director is in complete control and has the ability to review each show prior to airing."

Randolph added that a major benefit of switching to PVTV has been the relationship fostered between the news and production departments. "We've formed a solid bond between the two departments, as the anchors and directors work more closely with the PVTV system than we did previously," she said. "The line between the technical side and the news side has practically been erased and through higher collaboration, we've formed a new partnership."

Richard Crum, Director, WWTI, also reports cleaner shows and improved graphics as a result of switching to PVTV STUDIO NEWS. "Once you get comfortable with the system, you have a tendency to add more and more elements and make minor changes to create a better program each time out," said Crum. "It's an everyday learning experience. The system has allowed me to spend more time improving our graphics. With the two-channel stillstore, I can create customized graphics and simply import them into the system."

According to Crum, the DIGITAL CameraMan cameras are one of his favorite features of the system. "With SHOT Director, I push a button, and if I don't like the way it looks, I take the joystick and adjust the image as necessary," he said.
