A Treasure Trove of EQ Plugins

URS releases VST and AU versions of plugins previously only available for Pro Tools By Frank Moldstad

The Everything EQ Bundle includes 10 separate EQ plugins.

Since its founding in 2004, URS (Unique Recording Software) has been releasing some of the best EQ and compressor plugins on the Pro Tools platform. But starting this year, the company also began releasing its plugins in Audio Units and VST format for Mac OS X and Windows XP users.

This opens up a treasure trove of high quality tools for users of DAW programs such as Logic Pro 7, SONAR 5, ACID Pro 6, Cubase, Nuendo, Audition 2.0, or any other application that works with AU or VST format plugins. The only caveat is that they require the use of an iLok USB copy protection dongle, which costs $40. But with the iLoks increasingly widespread use, the dongle is  a good thing to have anyway, since it holds approximately 100 plugin authorizations.

Among the AU/VST plugins URS has unleashed are some EQs that digitally recreate the sound and look of classic Neve, API and SSL analog console equalizers. These represent a major upgrade to the sound sculpting capabilities of just about any DAW application. In this review, well look at the 10 plugins offered in the URS Everything EQ Bundle 5.0; a future review will cover the companys compressor plugins that are also newly released for AU and VST users.

The creator of these plugins is Bobby Nathan, a pioneering engineer and producer who for 26 years ran a studio called Unique Recording Studios overlooking Times Square in New York with his wife Joanne. The studio was closed in 2004 when they launched the plugin company, but its clientele included a diverse range of Hip Hop, Rock, and Jazz luminaries a small sampling includes Jay-Z, Mary J Blige, Stevie Winwood, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Miles Davis and McCoy Tyner. The studios web site, which is still accessible here, includes a fascinating page devoted to Nathans hand in the development of MIDI and sampling machines (direct link), which is worth a whole story by itself.

Onetime owner of a Neve 8068 and an SSL G+ console among other classic analog gear, Nathan put his background in recording and technology to good use when it came to developing these plugins. The ?A, ?S, and ?N series EQ plugins in this collection are based on API, Neve and SSL console EQs, although URS does not market them under those brand names. But the URS web site does acknowledge the API 550 B EQ as the inspiration for its ?A series. In addition, the URS FullTec EQ plugin is based on the highly coveted Pultec EQP-1 and MEQ-5 outboard EQ units.
