A Band Apart's Chris Applebaum Directs Mandy Moore's Crush

(July 23, 2001)
Director Chris Applebaum of A Band Apart recently completed a vibrant music video for Mandy Moore's "Crush", visually simulating the feelings of falling deep into a crush.

Applebaum lends his signature fashionable, fun and off-beat style to create a video that makes Moore appear more glamorous, stylish and more hip than ever. The video plays off of the upbeat song lyrics about love and having a crush.

The video opens as the camera peers inside of an apartment building into a sparse performance space where Mandy is performing "Crush" with her band. Mandy then moves towards the door to greet someone knocking, and exits the apartment. The knock on the door is from a handsome neighbor, the presumed object of her crush, who disappears around the corner before he and Mandy get a glimpse of each other.

This is where the video takes off into a metaphor of falling in love as Mandy walks out the door and literally falls through the floor and continues to do so throughout the video into different apartment units throughout the building. Moore falls from one setting to the next, and eventually crosses paths once again with the object of her crush as the video closes.

"Mandy looks flawless, her performances were superb, and her energy was indefatigable. I take a very hands-on approach to directing an artist's performance, and Mandy was, by far, one of the most natural and versatile artists I've ever worked with. She's a classically-trained actor, but she also has the maturity of a person who has amassed great experience in her life. We connected on a personal level and were able to draw from that to create a fantastic piece," commented Chris Applebaum.

Applebaum is an accomplished director. He directed Semisonic's hit video for "Closing Time" which was the first of two to be inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, and was heralded by MTV as a "break-through" video.

Applebaum has directed television commercials for Gap Kids and Motorola, and has worked with artists including Lit, Semisonic, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Lisa Loeb and Collective Soul. With A Band Apart, Applebaum has directed American Hi-Fi's "Flavor of the Weak," Third Eye Blind's "Deep Inside of You", Willa Ford's "I Wanna Be Bad" among others.
