4th man in Army Corps bribe case to remain in jail

4th defendant in Army Corps of Engineers bribery case to remain in jail without bond By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' One of four men charged in what federal prosecutors call one of the largest government contracting frauds will remain behind bars.

A lawyer for Harold Babb argued in federal court Tuesday that the evidence against his client was questionable and that he wasn't a danger to the community. But federal prosecutors say they have extensive evidence showing Babb met with a government witness and plotted "classic kickbacks." A federal magistrate ordered him held.

Babb and three others, including two employees of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, were arrested this month and charged in a $20 million fraud procurement scheme. Prosecutors say the men schemed scheme to steer contracts to a favored information technology subcontractor in exchange for kickbacks that paid for assorted luxuries. The three others also remain held.
