3D Scanner and Laser Cutter Added to the University of Advancing Technology Repertoire

(November 17, 2011)

TEMPE, AZ -- (Marketwire) -- 11/17/11 -- Students from every major at the University of Advancing Technology are excited for the new tech devices being deployed this fall. With the addition of a 3D scanner and a laser cutter, students will be able to use these state-of-the-art devices for asset creation and speedy prototype development.

The first in the new lineup of tech on campus is the NDI VicraSCAN. This 3D scanner plugs into a USB on any computer and pushes scanned data directly into any Autodesk program such as Maya or AutoCD. It has an intuitive handheld peripheral that resembles a barcode scanner and can be taken anywhere to scan any object up to eighteen inches.

A test run of the new 3D scanner showed impressive resolution as Senior Technology Strategist, Mark Hartlieb, tested the new tech by scanning his face and printing it via UAT's 3D printer. Its accuracy was precise, showing off details such as stubble and even skin pores.

This remarkable technology is available to students at UAT and will benefit art and science students alike. Art-oriented students will have the ability to rapidly prototype game assets and robotics students will be able to visualize and reverse engineer complex components.

Hartlieb commented, "The 3D scanner gives us the capability to not only reverse engineer but also once we get something into 3D, there are endless possibilities to what can be created, giving our students a huge creative advantage."

The second new tech device at UAT is the Epilog Legend, a laser cutter and engraver that will cut any fabric and thin sheets of metal. Students will decide what material their product will be made of and be able to utilize the machine to create objects such as a cutting chassis or platforms for robots. The laser cutter is available to all UAT students for project use, offering students the ability to engage in real-world applications.

About UAT: The University of Advancing Technology is a unique, private college that serves its student body by fostering knowledge creation and academic excellence in an environment that embraces the young technophiles of the world.
